Through the Eyes of Art: Millennial Parenting
MoPOP’s Black History Month Celebration
Join us as The Chosen Few and MoPOP present the 9th annual Through the Eyes of Art, a Black History Month celebration. Each year we bring together artists, community leaders, elected officials, and tastemakers from across the state of Washington to celebrate the Black experience.
This year we explore parenting in the Black community through the lens of the millennial caregiver. From Beyoncé ballads dedicated to her daughter Blue Ivy, to hit shows like Black-ish that dive deep into topics that make us laugh and cry, the exploration of parenting through a Black lens has always been both present and powerful in pop culture.
Featuring celebrity guest Mashonda Tifrere plus a panel of millennial parents, this special livestream event will allow us to center the diverse experiences, observations, and approaches that impact and inform how we are raising the next generation and create a safe space for Black parents to dialogue, grieve, laugh, and reflect on the parenting journey.

About Celebrity Guest Mashonda Tifrere
In January 2010, founder of ArtLeadHER Mashonda Tifrere and music producer Swizz Beatz finalized their divorce. When Swizz married award-winning singer/songwriter Alicia Keys, a new dynamic was born — three adults who loved and were deeply committed to raising Mashonda and Swizz’s four-year old son Kasseem. In her book Blend, Tifrere draws on the insights they gained from their journey as well as advice from family therapists, parenting experts, and other blending families to provide an invaluable resource for families like theirs.
Mashonda Tifrere, author of Blend: The Secret to Co-Parenting and Creating a Balanced Family, will join us for Through the Eyes of Art as she shares details on how she and her co-parents used communication, patience, and love to create an environment where they were able to work as a team and help their children thrive.

Every generation of parents swears they had it the worst and, more often than not, has gone on one of those "these kids are wilder than when we were kids" rants. But this event isn't about trying to delve into those age-old debates. Our hope is to simply explore and center the diverse experiences, observations, and approaches that impact and inform how we are raising the next generation.
We pulled together two panels of parents ready to sit down and share their story. Their openness allowed us to dialogue, grieve, laugh, and reflect on the parenting journey.
We hope you can join the conversation at 7:00pm PT Friday, February 25 on MoPOP’s Facebook or YouTube channel.

Reconvening the Village: Parenting Through the Black Millenial's Lens
BLOG POST BY KWAPI VENGESAYI
In January of 2020, my partner and I welcomed our little one into the world, and it’s true what the TikTok-ers have been saying: these pandemic babies are built different. Every moment with him has been incredible—every leap, milestone, and first, more exciting, head-scratching, and at times, more hilarious than the last.
But I would be lying if I didn’t admit that raising a little human amidst a global pandemic has been challenging—family gatherings over Zoom, no home visits from friends or relatives without a negative COVID-19 test or vaccination, and always feeling guilty over how small our little one’s world is because our anxiety won’t let us travel.

BLOG POST BY MoPOP
In earlier songs like "Upgrade U," Beyoncé makes the point of taking up space as an independent woman full of self-love, pointing out to her man how he can benefit by being with her, not the other way around. Songs like this not only empower her fans but stand as an example to her children.

More Through the Eyes of Art Content
In 2021, we focused on how food captures stories of heritage and lineage including stories of race, power, and (in)justice, with our theme “The Cookout.”
If you’re looking for a little musical inspiration in the kitchen, we built a smoking hot Spotify playlist.
