Tomi Adeyemi is a Nigerian American author known for her diverse and powerful female characters and Afrofuturist fantasy writing.
Adeyemi was first inspired to write her novel, Children of Blood and Bone when she was studying West African mythology and culture in Salvador, Brazil. Informed by her research, Adeyemi’s work has expanded into a trilogy, called Legacy of Orïsha, which explores protagonist Zélie Adebola’s adventures and trials in restoring magic to her people.
In addition to writing fiction, Adeyemi also runs an online writing program, recognized by Writers Digest as one of the 101 best websites for writers. Adeyemi has also written for Afrofuturist children show My Dad the Bounty Hunter, receiving critical and popular acclaim for the show’s script.
Adeyemi seeks to inspire Black girls and women with her writing by crafting representation in the science fiction and fantasy genres. Children of Blood and Bone won the Nebula and Hugo awards in 2018 and 2019.
