The exhibition invites visitors to step into the worlds Beckman has captured, weaving together imagery, text, and interactive elements. This exhibition presents the most extensive collection of Janette Beckman’s iconic photography to date, showcasing her dynamic visual storytelling across music, street culture, fashion, and activism. This exhibition offers a powerful exploration of Beckman’s ability to capture transformative cultural movements, from the raw energy of 1970s British Punk to the emergence of Hip-Hop in 1980s New York.
Visitors will embark on a visual journey through distinct facets of Beckman’s work, from her black-and-white street portraits documenting rebel subcultures to vibrant imagery of legendary musicians and style innovators. Highlights include portraits of iconic Hip-Hop artists like Salt-N-Pepa and Run-DMC, intimate backstage moments with British Punk bands, and striking depictions of global protests and activist movements. Alongside her music and street culture photography, Beckman’s work examining the connection between street style and brands such as Levi’s, Kangol, and Doc Martens illustrates her unique perspective on how personal expression influences mainstream fashion.
Through personal anecdotes accompanying the images, Beckman shares the stories behind her most famous works, such as her chance encounter with the “Islington Twins” that became one of her first celebrated street portraits, appearing in The Face and Melody Maker magazines and later exhibited at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, The Annenberg Space for Photography, Los Angeles and Kunsthal Rotterdam, among others. These behind-the-scenes insights offer visitors a deeper appreciation of her creative process and connection to her subjects.
