A piece from one of the hardest-working and most-recognized artists of his day has been added to the walls inside the Science Fiction and Fantasy Hall of Fame at the Museum of Pop Culture, where visitors can now find Jack Gaughan's "Hostages of Zark" on display.

The work was used as the cover art for the mid-December 1984 issue of Analog Science Fiction/Science Fact magazine. It is one of more than 500 book and magazine covers Gaughan created during his career that spanned from the 1940s until his death in 1985.

The mid-December 1984 issue of Analog was a “spoof” issue, and featured fake advertisements as well as stories featuring the character Kelvin Throop. Originated in 1964 by R. A. J. Phillips, Throop is a humorous figure shared by a number of authors and is best known for railing against bureaucracy and telling the unvarnished truth about the world.

Gaughan, a 2015 SFFHOF inductee who won Hugo Awards for Best Professional Artist and Best Fan Artist in 1967, would typically send publishers a few preliminary “comp” paintings to choose from, each with a different approach. His “Hostages of Zark”  painting illustrates the short story by Charles Sheffield.
