Sound Off! Internship (Unpaid)

SUMMARY

Museum of Pop Culture (MoPOP) is seeking an unpaid intern to focus on the Sound Off! program coordination. Sound Off! is the Northwest's premier 21 and under music showcase. Now in its 19th year, Sound Off! supports the local music scene by giving artists from different backgrounds an opportunity to showcase their work, connect with the larger artistic community, and perform live at a world class venue. Sound Off! Finalists receive extensive prizes and consultations from music industry professionals.

We receive over 100 applications from throughout the Northwest and narrow it down to 12 bands.  The 2020 Sound Off! concerts will take place at MoPOP on February 15, February 22, February 29 and March 7, 2020.  Past Sound Off! participants include: Cosmos, Naked Giants, Misundvrstood ft. Gypsy Temple, The Lonely Forest, Sol, Schoolyard Heroes, Idiot Pilot, The Globes, Kithkin, The Lonely H, Dyme Def, Tomten, Otieno Terry, NËSTRÄ, and Travis Thompson.  For more information on Sound Off! visit: www.mopop.org/soundoff.

The Sound Off! Intern would be working as a member of the Public Programs team and will assist in ensuring that the program and concerts run smoothly and that bands are supported fully in their experience/exploration of future goals. The intern will assist from the beginning to final stages of the programming including marketing and promotion of the event, preparation of band materials, communications with bands, data entry, production support, and final wrap up materials for the program.

This internship will provide the opportunity to work on a renowned youth artist development program, gain exposure to the local music community, and the opportunity to gain experience planning and managing arts/museum programs.

TIME COMMITMENT

The intern would work collaboratively with the Public Programming department and commit to 10-15 hours per week during regular office hours. The Sound Off! Intern would also be required to be at the Sound Off! Orientation on Saturday, January 11, and Sunday, January 12 plus all concert dates afternoon-evening on Saturdays, February 15, 22, and 29 and March 7.

  • Data entry and analysis
  • Preparing website and band materials
  • Copywriting for event
  • Outreach/marketing to community groups
  • Wrangling Sound Off! press information
  • Developing and evaluating surveys
  • Processing internal paperwork for marketing and event production
  • Attending all shows and act a production assistant
  • Promoting Sound Off! through Facebook and other social networking sites
  • Other duties as assigned

 

LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES

The intern will learn about the processes and resources involved in developing and producing diverse museum programming, including a renowned youth artist development program. He/she will meet and work with various museum staff, as well as have the opportunity to meet members of the local music community.

This is an excellent opportunity for students interested in non-profit public programming, event development and planning, and production. Interns will acquire hands on experience and get an inside view of varied museum public programs.

The internship will also provide the opportunity to attend or participate in museum events and departmental/project team meetings as available.

 

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

  • Current college or graduate student with a focus in museology, non-profit administration, education, humanities, art administration, music, or related field
  • Demonstrated interest in museum, arts programming, and/or music industry careers
  • Comfortable with MS Office Applications including MS Work and Excel
  • High attention to detail
  • Must be able to provide 3 references and pass a background check
