TIME COMMITMENT

The intern will work collaboratively with the Public Programming department and commit to 10-15 hours per week during regular office hours. The Sound Off! intern will also be required to be at the Sound Off! orientation on Saturday, January 13, plus all concert dates afternoon and evening on Fridays, February 9, 16, and 23 and Saturday, March 3.

SUMMARY

Museum of Pop Culture (MoPOP) is seeking an unpaid intern to focus on the Sound Off! program coordination. Sound Off! is the Northwest's premier 21 and under battle of the bands. Now in its 17th year, Sound Off! supports the local music scene by giving artists from different backgrounds an opportunity to showcase their work, connect with the larger artistic community, and perform live at the top venue in the region. Sound Off! finalists receive extensive prizes and consultations from music industry professionals.

The Sound Off! intern will be working with in the Programs and Education teams and will assist in ensuring that the program and concerts run smoothly and that bands are supported fully in their experience and exploration of future goals. The intern will assist from the beginning to final stages of the programming including marketing and promotion of the event, preparation of band materials, communications with bands, data entry, production support, and final wrap up materials for the program.

This internship will provide the opportunity to work on a locally renowned battle of the bands and young artist development program, gain exposure to the local music community, and experience planning and managing arts and museum programs.

JOB DUTIES

  • Entering data and analysis
  • Preparing website and band materials
  • Writing copy
  • Developing marketing and outreach to community groups
  • Managing Sound Off! press
  • Developing and evaluating surveys
  • Processing internal paperwork for marketing and event production
  • Attending all shows and assist with production
  • Promoting Sound Off! on social media
  • Other duties as assigned

LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES

The intern will learn about the processes and resources involved in developing and producing diverse museum programming, including a locally renowned battle of the bands. He/she will meet and work with various museum staff, as well as members of the local music community.

This is an excellent opportunity for students interested in non-profit public programming, event planning, and production. Interns will acquire hands on experience and get an inside view of varied museum public programs.

The internship will also provide the opportunity to attend or participate in museum events and departmental and project team meetings as available.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

  • Current college or graduate student with a focus in museology, non-profit administration, education, humanities, art administration, music, or related field
  • Demonstrated interest in museum, arts programming, and/or music industry careers
  • Comfortable with MS Office Applications including MS Work and Excel
  • High attention to detail
  • Must be able to provide 3 references and pass a background check
