'Heroes and Villains: The Art of the Disney Costume' Opens June 5 at MoPOP

The wait is nearly over! You’ll soon be able to see some of the spectacular costumes worn by your favorite Disney characters at the Museum of Pop Culture, with Heroes and Villains: The Art of the Disney Costume opening June 5. Tickets will be available in early May.

In partnership with the Walt Disney Archives, Heroes and Villains: The Art of the Disney Costume immerses visitors into the captivating world of Disney, illustrating how our understanding of its iconic characters is shaped through the artistry and creativity of its costumes. MoPOP will be the first museum to showcase the exhibition since it premiered at the 2019 D23 Expo.

From Julie Andrews’ feature film debut in Mary Poppins to Johnny Depp’s adventure as a swashbuckling scoundrel in Pirates of the Caribbean, Heroes and Villains: The Art of the Disney Costume features more than 70 original pieces spanning more than 55 years of costume in film, television, and theater, including ball gowns, sorcerers’ capes, military uniforms, tiaras, and of course, glass slippers. The exhibition explores the vision, process, and craft used to create the costumes worn by some of the biggest names in entertainment, presenting costumes from some of Disney’s kindest heroes and toughest villains, plus insights from designers, photographs, and a special film.

Throughout the exhibition, the work of Hollywood’s preeminent designers will be on display, including Academy Award®-winners Colleen Atwood, Sandy Powell, and Tony Walton, as well as Emmy® winner Ellen Mirojnick and Emmy nominees Eduardo Castro and Penny Rose. The exhibition’s main gallery will be split into three sections: “Disney Heroes,” “Disney Villains,” and “Spaces Between” — a place reserved for the costumes of Disney’s more complex antihero characters. “Cinderella’s Workshop,” a space centered around the beloved fairy-tale character’s dresses, will be another focal point, plus a handful of engaging interactive elements.

Tickets for MoPOP’s newest exhibition will be available in early May and you can sign up to get notified before they go on sale. MoPOP members will get to see Heroes and Villains: The Art of the Disney Costume first, and for free all year long. A special Member Preview Day is set for Friday, June 4 ahead of the public opening on Saturday, June 5. Look out for more details on how to RSVP for Member Preview Day by May 1.
