About the Special Guests


MC Sha-Rock is a living force of history, often referred to as the Luminary Icon or the Mother of the Mic. Sha-Rock began her journey in hip-hop culture as a B-girl/breakdancer in the 1970s, later becoming the first influential female emcee and building a foundation for female emcees worldwide.

  • 1979: MC Sha-Rock becomes the first authentic female MC/rapper from the streets of New York City to record a rap song with the Funky Four Plus One More on Enjoy Records.
  • 1981: MC Sha-Rock appears on the first televised hip-hop special on ABC’s 20/20 in a segment of “Rapping to the Beat” hosted by Hugh Downs.
  • 1982: MC Sha-Rock and members of the Funky Four Plus One More perform on Saturday Night Live hosted by Debbie Harry from the legendary rock group Blondie, making them the first hip-hop group to appear on national television.
  • 1984: MC Sha-Rock is featured in the iconic movie Beat Street, directed by Stan Latham and produced by Harry Belafonte.
  • 2009: MC Sha-Rock lends her likeness and voice to a Mitsubishi commercial which airs during the NBA finals.

Sha-Rock has received dozens of awards and honors and is recognized by her peers as the most celebrated female icon of early hip-hop. Archives and artifacts of her contributions to hip-hop culture are on display at Cornell University and in the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History & Culture in Washington, DC.

Today, Sha-Rock serves as an adjunct professor at Bowie State University and lectures on the origins and history of hip-hop at colleges and universities around the world. She has also been celebrated as the first woman to receive a key to the Bronx, New York, and in the 12th District of the Bronx June 1 has been officially ordained MC Sha-Rock Day.

Jarobi White is a hip-hop artist, chef, and a founding member of A Tribe Called Quest alongside members Q-Tip, Phife Dawg, and Ali Shaheed Muhammad. He continued to provide inspiration and input for many of Tribe’s albums throughout the groups history after shifting careers to pursue his passion for cooking. Jarobi began working as an executive chef and restaurant manager in Washington D.C., South Carolina, and Atlanta. In 2012, he teamed up with Dres to form Evitan and released their first album, "Speed of Life." Jarobi also took on a chef position in a West Village restaurant, helping it earn a Michelin rating. In 2007, he was honored with A Tribe Called Quest at VH1's Hip Hop Honors ceremony. Jarobi now runs Eats, Rhymes & Life, a food events company that combines his passions for food and music.

DJ Lady Love, one of the pioneering female DJs in the 1970s New York City scene, has made a name for herself with her roots in hip-hop. She has shared the stage with legendary acts such as Grand Wizzard Theodore, Crash Crew, Fearless Four, and Grandmaster Flash and the Furious 5. Born in The Bronx and raised in Queens, DJ Lady Love has left her mark on the party scene, bringing her unique style and energy to audiences across the country. Today, she resides in Seattle, where she hosts her own internet radio station and continues to inspire a new generation of music lovers.

DJ Yaddy (she/her) is well known from hosting parties in the 206 since her teenage years, to spinning nightclubs all over the US, and landing a job at Broadway Media in Salt Lake City. She started in Security at KEXP 90.3 FM and worked in their Remote Technology Department, and is now a major player of their On-Air Promotions Team. She is also a dynamic contributor to the Sway and Swoon DJ Collective, a collaborative of amazing female DJ's.

Besa Gordon is a Seattle-based influencer and personality at iHeart Radio. She got her start in radio in 2018 as an overnight jock on Seattle’s KUBE 93.3 before taking over KUBE’s popular/legendary midday slot three years later. Today, she can be heard on HITS 106.1 in Seattle, JAM’N 107.5 in Portland, B95 in Fresno, California, V101 in Sacramento, California, and 102.3 The Beat in Austin, Texas.

When not on the radio, Besa raises her voice for Pacific Northwest artists as a member of the Governor’s board for the PNW Chapter of the Recording Academy. Besa also hosts a weekly pop culture show on Converge Media called The Rewind with Besa in which she discusses the biggest trending topics of the week and interviews key figures from around the PNW.

Kinsey Paul is a published multimedia artist, designer, and stylist who got her start in the industry during her matriculation at Clark Atlanta University, where she studied psychology as well as fashion design and merchandising. Kinsey is the founder and creator of 11:11 Concepts, a luxury beauty, design, and styling collective which celebrates individual style by way of creative, intentional, and lavish services. Her work has been showcased during Miami’s Mercedes Benz Swim Week and The BET Hip-Hop Awards as well as in publications such as Brides Magazine and Mob Journal.

Kinsey is an avid traveler, an army wife, and a Philadelphia native who calls Atlanta her second home and Miami her third. She is a bonus mom, a dog mom of two, and a self-declared foodie and mixologist who believes in incorporating luxury into as many areas of life as possible.

Adeerya Johnson is a published scholar with nearly a decade of experience researching, writing, and teaching on race and gender studies and hip-hop. She is currently Digital Collections Archivist for MoPOP’s early hip-hop collection as well as Guest Curator for My Mic Sounds Nice: Hip-Hop Feminism in History.
