Don’t you hate it when your nose falls off, or you accidentally pop your ear into your forehead? You can only imagine how poor Mr. Potato Head has felt day-in day-out since New York’s George Lerner produced him in 1952.

Everyone’s favorite tater-with-feet has been the source of more hours of mindless diversion than the Picasso works he can so eerily resemble. In 1953, Lerner introduced our starchy hero to Mrs. Potato Head and a family was born. Originally, the Mr. Potato Head kit comprised of pieces on sharp pins, which were affixed into one’s own household potato.

But in 1964, Hasbro began to manufacture the plastic potato and the rest is history. Those who spent sleepless nights wondering what this funny-faced rice alternative would sound like if he could actually speak had their ponderings answered when his role in Disney Pixar’s Toy Story was brought to life vocally by Don Rickles.
