While the words “Wish you were here” may be synonymous with postcard vernacular, in 1939 the View-Master provided viewers the opportunity to transport themselves “here” via one eyeball and a quick flick of the finger. The paper disks of 3-D-bearing images splayed all over the floors of playrooms today were not originally created as a children’s toy, but rather sold as an alternative to the scenic postcard. Since its debut, more than 1.5 billion reels have been issued, depicting everything from one small step for man to the antics of a square sea dweller called SpongeBob. Earning the View-Master a coveted spot in the National Toy Hall of Fame, along with Mr. Potato Head and Barbie –– who must’ve told the View-Master: “Wish you were here”.
