Sex has been around for centuries, so what's the big deal right?
The big deal is that it was a book modelled after cookbooks such as The Joy of Cooking with sections including "Starters", "Main Courses" and "dessert". Mmm, sounds tasty.
The Joy of Sex was the first mainstream sex manual that illustrated sex to a mainstream audience (ok second there was that other lesser known title, The Kama something). Anyway, it was the first illustrated, serious sex manual to gain wide distribution and acceptance which played a part in the sexual revolution. There has been a lot of controversy over the said book. Many religious groups have fought to keep it off of public library bookshelves and some have won only to have the decision overturned and the manual restored to the library shelves once again, pages dog eared and doggie style.
The book was and has been revised many times to bring it up to date with current issues as well as models which reflect current popular body types (and umm, hair styles). The approach must have worked. The Joy of Sex has spent 11 weeks on the New York Times best sellers list and more than 70 weeks in the top five spreading love and the message that sex is fun. How is that for a recipe for sexcess.
