September 25, 1987

The Princess Bride charmed audiences in 1987 with its witty banter, heartfelt romance, and imaginative setting. It remains one of the most popular comedic fantasy films of all time.

The film is based on William Goldman's 1973 novel of the same name, which presents a unique structure, promising to show only the “good parts” of a supposedly longer work. The Princess Bride was directed by Rob Reiner and stars Cary Elwes as Westley and Robin Wright as Princess Buttercup. The film is packed with high adventure including, “Fencing, fighting, torture, revenge, giants, monsters, chases, escapes, true love, miracles....”

The Princess Bride is on several top film lists including “Bravo's 100 Funniest Movies” and the American Film Institute’s “100 Greatest Love Stories of All Time.”
