As the creator of some of rock’s most memorable guitar riffs, GRAMMY® Award-winning and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductee Joe Walsh has had a remarkable career spanning nearly five decades and dozens of hit songs.

Walsh first earned attention in 1969 as guitarist and vocalist for the James Gang, a Cleveland-based power trio that scored an FM radio hit with “Funk #49.” The band opened for the Who in the U.S. and U.K., and Walsh became friends with the Who’s gonzo drummer, Keith Moon, who mentored him on rock ‘n’ roll decadence and destruction. Years later as a solo artist, Walsh wrote “Life’s Been Good,” a deadpan account of rock star excess that still stands as one of pop music’s most brilliant satirical songs.

Walsh went on to form the group Barnstorm and continued to record and release albums as a successful solo artist, penning 12 solo records to date and as many classic hits including “Rocky Mountain Way,” “Walk Away,” “Life of Illusion,” “Ordinary Average Guy,” “In the City,” and “Analog Man.”

In 1975, the Eagles, then known for their tight harmonies and country-rock sound, asked Walsh to join the band. The guitarist brought his harder-edged rock sound to their next album, Hotel California, most famously on his solos for the title song and “Life in the Fast Lane.” The album made Walsh and the Eagles superstars, and went on to sell more than 50 million copies. The follow-up album, The Long Run, included Walsh’s “In the City,” originally recorded for The Warriors soundtrack, and won a GRAMMY®. The band split shortly after. Fourteen years later, the Eagles released Hell Freezes Over which went on to sell over 10 million copies. The tour that accompanied the album was one of the most successful in music history.

Walsh’s distinctive guitar playing, songwriting, and live performances have inspired countless musicians and fans throughout the world and make him an ideal Founders Award honoree.
