Nirvana: The Legacy of the Green Shirt

Photo of Kurt Cobain and Krist Novoselic of Nirvana at MoPOP

Nirvana may have been one of the biggest bands in the world, but when it came to clothing, the band members were very down to earth. Whether it was Kurt Cobain's ripped up cardigans or Krist Novoseliç's basic shirts, their style was simple, comfortable, and most of all affordable.

One piece of clothing in particular got its fair share of the limelight. Krist Novoseliç wore this green, short sleeve button down on stage numerous times over the years. It first appeared in 1987 during the Pen Cap Chew days at show at the Community World Theater. He also wore the shirt two years later during the Bleach tour in 1989, but that wasn't the last we'd see of it. Krist wore the shirt yet again at the Motorsports International Garage show on September 22, 1990 where he was photographed by the well-respected Seattle photographer Charles Peterson. That shirt really got a lot of stage time!

One might wonder what was so special about this shirt that made Krist want to keep wearing it. Was it a lucky shirt? Or was it just really comfortable? Or perhaps it was the only clean shirt at the time? Whatever the reason, it lives on eternally in photos and is currently on display at MoPOP in Nirvana: Taking Punk to the Masses.
